Have you ever wanted to add a task with your voice? Ever wished you could just say “Add this task” when you have a great idea or need to add a task to make sure you don’t drop a ball? Well, I’ve been a huge fan of Amazon Echo aka “Alexa” for some time. I’m also a huge fan of insightly. Indirectly, I’ve learned to love IFTTT and Zapier. Here’s why…

I have so many ideas. I don’t always have the time or willingness to write them or type them all down. But if only I could just say them out loud and they would magically appear in my favorite task, customer management and workflow app. Well, this dream is now a reality!

I’ve been racking my brain on this one but now I can say “Alexa, add task ‘go flying’ to my To Do list” and it will automatically appear in my insightly tasks. While this process can be made easier with a few trigger and action updates and of course adding Alexa to Zapier, I got it done with a combination of IFTTT and Zapier. Here’s what I did:

Step 1:

Since Alexa is not a part of Zapier, but is a part of IFTTT, I started there. I had to then find an app that Alexa could trigger her action to. I searched high and low and it ended up to be old Gmail herself. I set “AlexaAddTask!” as the subject and put the “{{AddedItem}}” in the email body. The email arrived as expected.

Here’s the Recipe in IFTTT:

Here’s the email received in Gmail:

Step 2:

Now enter Zapier. I created a simple Zap to add Gmail with the same subject line as a task in insightly. Boom, it worked perfectly.

Here’s the Zap I created:

Here’s the Zap result (I manually ran it to show this to you):

And the result in insightly, a gorgeous task that I asked Amazon Echo “Alexa” to add:
